"...be captivated by Fraser's natural beauty and refreshed by its lack of modern man's influence"
Fraser Island, the world's largest sand island, is a giant World Heritage-listed sand mass, stretching 123km along the Southern Coast of Queensland.
The listing in 1992, recognised the island's globally significant natural features:
Evolving dune, lake, soil and forest systems, the extent and age of which are outstanding examples of our on-going geological and biological processes;
Unique landscapes, which are examples of superlative natural occurrences.
Long sandy beaches, sea grass meadows, reefs, mangrove forests and sandy shoals border much of Fraser Island. They provide shelter for fish, prawns and other crustaceans and are feeding grounds for dugong, turtles and shorebirds, some of which are rare or threatened.
Visit Fraser's range of habitats in a 4x4 vehicle with Kookaburra. Inland tracks will take you to pristine freshwater lakes, crystal clear creeks, wallum scrub and woodlands, old growth rainforest and eucalypt forests.
The 'Sand Highway' stretching along the eastern side of the island will show you Indian Head to the north. This is the only rock on the island and the starting point for its formation over 200 million years ago. Seven hundred thousand-year-old sand dunes, coloured sands at the Pinnacles and the historic Maheno wreck are all accessed from the beach. Swim at Eli Creek where 70 megalitres of crystal clear spring water flows to the ocean every day and hike across dunes to Lake Wabby, before it is engulfed by the massive sand blow (mobile sand dune) ever so slowly bearing down upon it.
Known as K'Gari by its original inhabitants, Fraser Island was truly paradise to the Butchulla people who called it home and continues to amaze visitors from the world over. See Fraser with Kookaburra, and you are sure to be captivated by its natural beauty, and refreshed by its lack of modern man's influence.
